About

Hi, I'm Alec Saunders.  I'm the CEO of VoIP startup iotum Corporation, and the author of Saunderslog.com. I started writing to help other entrepreneurs and business people learn about the Voice over IP space, and to pass along some of the product management and marketing expertise I've accumulated over my career.

Early in my career I worked for a bunch of Canadian start-ups in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, which, one by one, went under.  In 1992 I went to work for Microsoft, and in 1994 I moved to Microsoft headquarters in Redmond Washington.  Amongst other things I helped to launch Windows 95, launched the first two versions of Internet Explorer, the Universal Plug and Play initiative, and Microsoft's push into home networks.  I learned a lot about how software businesses work and why the businesses I had been involved with earlier failed.

I left Microsoft in November of 2000, and returned to Canada.    Since my return, I've been VP of Marketing for QNX Software in Kanata, sat on the board of Fusetalk, and been VP of marketing at Versatel Networks.   In the fall of 2003 I started Iotum Corporation with my close friend and business partner, Howard Thaw, where I am currently the CEO.

Although this is primarily a technology and business blog, it's also my personal blog.  From time to time, amongst the regular posts, you'll find a little bit of humor or photos that I've taken. Periodically I refer to my family or friends, and sometimes you even see my vacation photos. Some people have told me to stay focused and on topic.  This is my soapbox.  You don't have to read it, and I won't be hurt if you don't…  or better yet, if you get your own soapbox and outdo me.

Enjoy, and feel free to send me mail at alecs@exmsft.com

Alec.
