Skype’s ham-handed 4.0 news embargo

Skype Limited

Image via Wikipedia

I want to say thanks to the Skype PR team for saving me some time.  You see, Skype 4.0 looks like a fine piece of software.  And it looks like I won’t need to attend the press and blogger event tomorrow at noon.  My invitation to “learn about the future of Skype” is tomorrow, June 18, at 12:00 noon.  Apparently, everyone else I know was invited to the cocktail reception before the party, and that’s where the news happened.  Embargo, for those in the know, was lifted at 4PM PDT today.

So, from one busy CEO to another, thanks Josh Silverman.  You saved me an hour out of my day, plus the effort of writing a review.

Squawk Box June 17

It’s more than a decade after Mark Andreeson made his famous comment that the browser was the new OS. You know, the one that led to the browser wars of the 1990’s, and Microsoft’s antitrust trial? Today we discussed browsers and browser technology.

First, there’s the release of Firefox 3.0, and today is the day that the Mozilla Foundation has declared “download Firefox day”. Everyone on the call planned to download Firefox 3.0, and we had a fairly detailed feature dump from Dan York.

Second, there was a fabulous little piece on Techdirt titled The Browser is the New Operating System, which we debated.

And finally, we had a short discussion about the new E66 and E71 phones released by Nokia.

On the call: Jeanette Fisher, Hudson Barton, Dan York, Jeb Brilliant, Ian Hood, Bill Volk, James Body, Jonathan Jensen, Sheryl Breuker, Frank Abrams, and Alaa Ali

Mobivox appoints Diedrich CEO

I was travelling yesterday and missed being able to write that Mobivox has a new CEO, Peter Diedrich.  I first met Peter as a partner at Skypoint Capital.  Shortly after he joined Thunder Bay Telecom as president, and periodically I’d run into him at the airport flying back and forth from Ottawa to his new fiefdom in the North.

His appointment as CEO of Mobivox is great news, for Mobivox and it’s customers.  While I’ve admired Mobivox’ innovative technology solutions in the past, at it’s heart is evolving into an alternative phone company.  A phone company exec is probably just the ticket needed to help fuel growth and profitability.
