A video-enabled iPhone could’ve been something to look forward to, and so the big losers, I believe, are the users.
But just as you wrote, Steve Jobs and Apple are soon to be replaced by a big developers community using the iPhone SDK. And with all due respect to people in Nokia, Samsung or Apple, the handset wars we see today ? are really not that interesting. In the long run it will be the users and developers who will determine who will win the mobile handset war. And as handset vendors (should) think of the users first , I am sure they will move their phones in the right direction, that is, the moving picture direction.
More on this here:

Mark -- I think RIM has to play catch-up on the handset, but I expect they can and will do that. The bigger issues to me are the structural ones around business model and marketing. Job's et al are playing a different level of game than Mike and Jim. We're watching the San Jose Sharks play the Kitchener Rangers.

Conrad - the revenue split is a deep dark secret, but I would imagine that someone handy with a spreadsheet could reverse engineer it based on the comments that have been made publicly by AT&T. I haven't though.

As for Verizon ODI, I would say wait until fall. If the rumored RIM Thunder really does ship on Verizon exclusively and if it is as good as it appears it might be, then ... we might have RIM playing Apple to Verizon's AT&T.

Stuart - I think push notification is smart. FWIW, it's the way that RIM handles notifications as well in order to conserve power. Up until now, RIM has been the only company to go this route.

Alec,

A really thorough analysis - must have taken a lot of work but great insight. It would surprise me if RIM didn't aggressively respond. It would help if RIM offered a better browser and multi-media (music, video) features.

Randy,

I'm not sure why there's no video recording. It's possible someone will create a video app before July 11th, though. There's already an illegal one in existance on the current iPhone.

It's all about syncing to the cloud - Apple's MobileMe was the most interesting part of the iPhone 3G WWDC keynote...

Okay, so the iPhone got better - so what? To me, the new iPhone 3G was NOT the most interesting part of yesterday's Steve Jobs keynote at the Apple WWDC event. Sure, the blogosphere (and mainstream media) is buzzing like...

How does Verizon come out with its ODI program? Also, any idea what Apple's split of data revenues is for iPhone 1.0 subs?

Alec,
Great review. You didn't say anything about the “Apple Push Notification Service”. Your perspective on this would be great.
Cheers
