I just got a SMS from Rogers which says that they going to apply long-distance rates on top of my current air time rate to all long-distance incoming calls.
This is just ridicules.
In Canada we have worse mobile service in the world and this is not a joke. Most developing countries have lower price rate for much better quality mobile service. I will vote for anyone on next election who can promise that we will have the mobile service provider that can deliver high quality service with a reasonable price rate. There is no one country in Europe has so high price rate and so poor quality service!!!

Looks like Verizon introduced a new plan in July called America's Choice with Canada. Includes unlimited long distance to Canada (and the USA) and a few other perks which wouldn't be of much use to me. I've emailed Verizon to confirm if there are any roaming charges when roaming in Canada.

Might make use of it as there does not appear to be any competition in Canada for cell phones rates.

Looks like Verizon no longer offers their free roaming plans (aka North America Choice Plan) as of May 16, 2007. Only existing subscribers to the plan will be able to add lines with this option which is a bummer as it looked like an attractive option.

Yep...for me, a North American plan would probably be the best option. Travelling between Toronto, Ottawa, and Waterloo has racked up a huge long distance bill for me, especially for incoming calls as I get charged 30c/min on top of airtime. It's a hassle to hangup and call someone back with a calling card, so I often just talk, and before long, my bills are $150+ a month for just a few hundred minutes of long distance voice.

My data usage is another thing. I use about 500MB of data per month, spread between email, MobiTV, internet radio and web browsing. If I were to do this with Rogers, it would bankrupt me. T-Mobile offers the unlimited international data roaming which I'm on for an extra $20 a month.

The callback services aren't an option for me as I get charged LD for any incoming calls outside of my calling area anyways, so things like MobileMiser won't work.

Next time I head to the US I'm visiting a Verizon store.
