Nerdy, Geeky and Cheap

VoIPGirl has published a continuation of Mark Evan’s list of Canadian VoIP service providers.  I think she left out a really important option though.  It’s nerdy, it’s geeky, and it’s cheap.

Get yourself a PC, install Asterisk, and buy an account from Unlimitel.  Yeah, you’re going to have to futz with Linux, and you have to feel comfortable messing around with some truly low level stuff.  But when you’re done, you’ll have the cheapest service, and better features than any of the service providers out there deliver.Â

Thanks for this - I added one - my provider, HIP Communications. They are terrific.

Right. I actually met the HIP guys at VON a couple weeks ago. They seemed great!

They are. Focused, smart and on top of their game. And uniquely positioned to really give the bigger guys a run or their money. My money’s on HIP :)

Rob, Alec, thanks for the kind words! This posting prompted me to write a little something about Asterisk in the Enterprise and the general lack of skillset within the IT department that’s often required to properly support Asterisk. Comments welcome: http://benlucier.wordpress.com/2006/09/26/asterisk-in-the-enterprise-be-mindful-about-its-skillset/

Hi, just saw the post, I’m pretty much a novice and even though I read a bunch of stuff on the asterik website, I’m not sure I understand.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    thanks.
