Tracking Your Own Meme: What’s Your Pain?

Every so often I get asked by a VC about the pain that iotum is solving for customers.  It’s an interesting question.  Do people really need to filter, rank, and prioritize calls the way that iotum enables?  Or, is simply manually screening the call by looking at caller ID good enough?

Well, I say no.  And the reason why I say no is the preponderance of evidence otherwise.  For many months now I’ve had a daily Google Alert on the keywords Cell Phone Etiquette running.  On any given day it returns one to five hits.  Today’s hit:

Where have all the phone booths gone?
Asbury Park Press – Asbury Park,NJ,USA
on my cell phone that, "Yes, 59-year-old men look like lechers if they date 27-year-old women." With that, my self-professed, cell-phone etiquette went right

I wondered what the heck was so important that he couldn’t rest a few minutes and read a magazine instead of text messaging between calls, and hopping up and down like a Jack Russell terrier on crack.

Google Alerts are an awesome way to track the meme’s that define your business, and to provide abundent evidence of the pain you’re addressing.

Airport Power Meme Continues

The Airport Power Meme continues to gather momentum.  I got an email today from Montreal’s La Presse wanting to interview me about this story tomorrow.

Jeff Goldman writes anything an airport does to accommodate its travelers, not restrict them (security concerns aside), seems like a good idea — and the "fire hazard" argument just seems ridiculous. Restricted outlet usage causes enormous frustration for travelers, with no clear benefit to the airport.

Glenn Fleischman has opened up a thread inviting people to vent or praise.  There’s quite a lengthy comment thread going there.

The GridSkipper has a lengthy piece pointing to a whole pile of resources, including the new AirPower Wiki. Incidentally, the Skipper is mistaken when he says that Montreal is locked down.  Certainly there’s a scarcity, and power outlets in the lounges are capped, but you can go sit in a phone booth, or on the floor as I did.  Chicago O’Hare, however, is a different story.  Power is virtually non-existant there.

And JP Hebert also posted about his frustrations with power and air travel.

Air Power Wiki Created

Yesterday this little blog had it’s highest traffic day ever, recording 21,000 hits from over 5,000 visits.  The reason was one posting: Airports Powerfully Bad. Clearly it struck a nerve!

I’ve created the Air Power wiki (http://airpower.pbwiki.com) using PBwiki. It’s a bit of an experiment, because I’ve never run a wiki before.  In the spirit of all wikis, this is a shared resource for people to use and contribute to.  If you find yourself in an airport looking for power, check the wiki out because somoene else might have found power before you and logged it.  And if you don’t find an entry, log what you find at the airport — no power, or power at Gate XX opposite the desk, and so on.
