I really think the ability to effortleslly link stuff in the real world to the web is a key enabler of e-commerce beyond the PC. When I can point a camera, or a Shazam enabled phone, at some arbitrary object, and instantly get back info about it, I think the way I use the web will change dramatically.

Actually, this is an old idea and there has been a lot of progress in the market. Shazam has been doing something very similar for a while now for music. http://shazam.com/uk/do/home Basically you hear a song you like, you call a service and hold up your cell phone. Instantly you're SMS'd the song title, etc, and an option to buy. Works GREAT. Fido now offer thier service in Canada. Neat stuff.

OK, I'm imagining it in a camera phone... small displays in all camera phones, right? This invention would change *that* how? Small keyboards in all camera phones, too, right? Being able to jump to a specific website from a picture is neat, but what about typing anything else in? This invention would change *that* how? Pardon my obtusuosity; maybe you'll have to draw me a picture...

Imagine this technology in a camera phone, James. The experience of surfing the web on a small display with an inadequate keyboard is pretty unsatisfying... this might change that.

It certainly is way cool. But does it have the general applicability to be a "killer app"? No aspersions on the niftiness of the invention, but I suspect it might not be.
