The case of David Ahenakew is a sad one. 

David Ahenakew is a decorated war veteran.  He was once Leader of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, the first ever elected National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, recipient of the Order of Canada, and recipient of an honorary doctor of Laws degree.  In the 1960’s and 70’s, Ahenakew was one of the leading lights of the aboriginal self government movement, and duly honoured for it.

On Friday he was convicted of hate crimes.  How far he has fallen.

Nobody can support the things he said.  Moreover, his accusations that First Nations people can’t get a fair trial in Canada, and that his case was about racism against First Nations people, were simply a smoke screen that a bitter old bigot used to try to deflect attention away from the real issue - himself.
