David -- I agree. I've NEVER had a problem, and have been travelling in Mexico for many years. I always drive myself. The only problem I've ever had was getting ripped off by Pemex.

The Correct word is BANDIDOS, that is Bandits in english. I'm from Chetumal, the state capital of Quintana Roo and I must say that there is extremely hard to be robbed in the roads of the Yucatan peninsula an any hour. As in any other part of the world the safest thing to do is to travel using the sunligth, but I can say that this reguion it's very safe.

Circa 1996 or 97 there were a series of road robberies in the roads of southern mexico. The reason for that was the zapatista upraising from 1994. The zapatista people found that it was a good way to get money for weapons and food. Those times are long gone and the safety in all mexican higways and roads have improved.

You should como to México, to see it by yourself.
