What do you get when cross a giraffe and a chicken?

Here’s a thought experiment:  What do you get when you cross the fastest growing voice application on the network today with the largest file sharing utility. In Skype you have voice communications and instant messaging, and in Kazaa you have file sharing.  The combined product would seem to be a niche targeting swap happy kids, rather than the PSTN killer that Skype claims to be.

Broadband providers to get squeezed?

Worth a read.  The clear consensus amongst analysts is that the cable guys have the most to win in this game.  I have yet to see anyone, however, comment on what the entry of AOL or MSN might mean.   Either of them could be first global converged communications company.

Analysys: VOIP Squeeze Coming (Light Reading). Alternative voice-over-IP providers like <b>Vonage</b> Holdings Corp. could find themselves squeezed out of their own niche by the established players looking to get in on the act, says an Analysys Research Ltd. report on the U.S. market.

Eleven months ago I was in the process of doing the early market requirements documents for a company to produce a gateway platform for the home.  It was to be a router, with 802.11 VoIP capabilities, and the ability to host some basic home applications. A month later Cisco acquired Linksys, and on that day I called my business partner and said “we need to do something else”.  What’s remarkable about this piece of news is the speed with which Linksys have embraced that vision.
