Opposition to US Attack Building
Lot’s of stuff in the news this morning on Iraq. Opposition is building pretty strongly against a US attack on Iraq.
From the NY Times
- Summons to War - OpEd stating that the case for war against Iraq hasn’t been made.
- I’m With Dick! Let’s Make War! - Maureen O’Dowd suggesting that the Saudi’s might make a better target.
- Bush Assails Hussein, but Saudis Are Firm in Opposing War - Report on yesterday’s meeting between Bush and the Saudi ambassador.
From Stuff, out of New Zealand
- Bin Laden said to be back at helm of al Qaeda - report that Bin Laden is back, and planning attacks on American soil to coincide with US attacks on Iraq if they occur. He wants to be seen as the only Arab standing up to the US.
- Iraq defiant, Arabs alarmed by new US war talk - Saddam Hussein positioning an attack on his country as an attack on all Arabs.
From the Globe and Mail
- Arabs warn against making war on Iraq. WASHINGTON — The United States and Saudi Arabia tried to put a brave face on their roiled relationship yesterday, as the Saudis again rejected American hints at war with Iraq and other Arab countries warned of a dangerous backlash in the Middle East.
From the Washington Post
- Double Standards Make Enemies Salman Rushdie (!) writing about the double standards in US diplomacy, and the possible irony of Islamic Jihad being unleashed by a US attack on Iraq after avoiding it in Afghanistan.
From the Ottawa Citizen
- UN, world leaders voice opposition to U.S. military strike on Iraq. Kofi Annan speaks out.
- From David Warren - last week he spoke about a "Lincolnesque policy" with respect to Iraq. Here’s part two from the Sunday Spectator, titled "Bush and Lincoln".
- And the other David Warren from today "It’s all done with mirrors". Warren argues that the final signals are there for the attack. Pretty obvious - not up to par with some of what he’s written.
